Thinking about reuniting with your family in Denmark? This guide simplifies the process by outlining the key requirements and steps involved in applying for family reunification under Danish law.
Who Can Apply?
You may qualify for family reunification if:
- You have a spouse or registered partner living in Denmark who meets specific requirements.
- Special rules apply if your partner is a citizen of another Nordic country or is studying/working in Denmark under EU law. (This will be covered in a separate video.)
Requirements for You (the Applicant):
- Valid Marriage or Registered Partnership: Your marriage or partnership must be legally recognized in Denmark. This typically means you were both present during the ceremony and were at least 18 years old at the time.
- Cohabitation Alternative: If your marriage is not recognized, you can demonstrate at least 18 months of continuous cohabitation with your partner.
- Voluntary Relationship: The relationship must be genuine and not entered into solely for obtaining a residence permit.
- Age Requirement: You must be at least 24 years old.
- Initial Denmark Visit: You must have visited Denmark at least once before applying.
Requirements for Your Spouse/Partner in Denmark:
Independent Residence: They must have a suitable, independent residence outside areas designated as having integration challenges.
Financial Self-Sufficiency: They must be financially self-supporting and not reliant on social welfare for the past three years.
Financial Guarantee: They must provide a financial guarantee (typically exceeding 50,000 DKK) that will be locked for 10 years (partially returned upon passing Danish language tests).
Clean Criminal Record: They must not have been convicted of domestic violence.
Integration Requirements: They must partially fulfill integration requirements, including passing a Danish language test and providing proof of work experience or education.
Integration Requirements (Combined):
- Language Test: Pass a Danish or English language test at B1 level.
- Work Experience: Have at least three years of full-time work experience in the past five years.
- Education: Have completed at least one year of education (e.g., diploma or degree).
