Newcastle United ended their 70-year wait for a major trophy with a 2-1 victory over Liverpool in the 2025 Carabao Cup final.
The Magpies’ last piece of silverware came in 1955 when they lifted the FA Cup. However, they suffered five consecutive final defeats in the years that followed—three in the FA Cup and two in the League Cup, including a 2-0 loss to Manchester United in the 2023 Carabao Cup final.
Dan Burn, a lifelong Newcastle fan, opened the scoring with a towering header just before halftime. Alexander Isak extended their lead early in the second half with a clinical finish inside the box.
Liverpool attempted a late comeback, with Federico Chiesa pulling one back in the 96th minute, but Newcastle held firm to secure the historic victory.
The defeat adds to Liverpool’s woes after their recent Champions League exit. However, they still maintain a 12-point lead over Arsenal in the Premier League.
